HOLD by Kirsten Tranter is such a haunting and incredible book. It's poetic in its literary excellence but there is a veil of melancholy that surrounds it the entire time.It takes a long time to understand the twist of a dream vs. the reality and this makes the book mesmerising but somewhat subtle - I could imagine some people may find it slow, I did not, I found it beautiful like a peaceful piece of classical music.
Shelley's boyfriend, Conrad died in a tragic surfing accident. They fought the morning of his death and she realises that this is it, she doesn't want the relationship to end - little did she know it was out of her hands. Fast forward 3 years and we learn her pain by the back stories she tells us, but she is now living in Paddington (as far away from Bronte surf - where Conrad died, as possible) with David and his 15 year old daughter Janie. While quite suburban and settled on the outside the fact is, her turmoil is profound and reflected in the discovery of a secret room she furnishes and becomes quite obsessive about. Enter Kieran, the vintage furniture sales man who looks like Conrad in every way. Hence this sensual mystery takes an unexpected turn and mesmerises you.
I won't say anymore as I don't want to spoil it however it's a read I could not put down. It was gifted to me by Harper Collins for an honest review.
Honestly, I've never read anything like it, on face HOLD feels simple and a book of self discovery, but the depth, the complexity, the emotion, the fantasies are very original. While unsettling, it is addictive and highly recommended. 5 haunting stars
