First and foremost - I'm not a book snob. This book is pure torture to read due to the astounding number of commas. As in a sentence might have 8 commas. If you write or deal with technical writing, then this book will likely drive you up the wall in short order.
Something I am learning and I think Marbut's novel proves this, is that there is power in vulnerability and for once, I read characters who were vibrant and real because of their vulnerability, their searching for meaning. It isn't fair to label this novel because it is so rich with characters and their relationships. Each one is experiencing, playing with, coming to terms with their own vulnerabilities in the way we all must do as we navigate the mess of life. I think most readers will find something deeply identifiable in the novel and its characters. Like many of the best stories, these characters will stay with you long after you close the book.
If the author drinks as much alcohol and smokes as much tobacco as his characters do, it might explain the poor quality of the writing. I was surprised how good the ending was, however
When I converse with family, friends, neighbors and accquaintainces, we speak in concise sentences and not long paragraphs. I think that is the reason I discontinued reading Awake in the Mad World. Too much dialog distracts from the narrative story. I gave this 3 stars for effort.
Damon Ferrell Marbut creates a world that pulls you in and that will not let you go! I was enthralled by this story. The characters, this coming of age story that he has created, to me, is an absolute triumph. Down to the last page I was in it completely. it is one of the best books I've read in a very long time. imagination is important to me, and reading this book made me so happy that I would yearn for the moment that I could open it and read its pages. Truly gifted, this book, like all of Mr. Marbut's works, is a labor of love. Damon Ferrell Marbut writes with passion and complexity, excitement and joy, love and heartbreak. I cannot wait till his next book. If you want to fall into a world where every character is relatable, the story is relevant, A book where the unexpected wave of emotion will move you to tears and laughter. PLEASE get this book. You (like me) will not be disappointed.
I like the characters and the story in this book. It's not quite world class yet but it really is on the way for its originality and I certainly wanted to see how it all panned out. Marbut is definitely a writer of quality able to capture what is going on out there in the world of today. Worth a read. Could do with some tightening up and maybe in the next book, more of a final pay-off.

Marbut comes through with his portrayal of twenty-something wanders searching for their places in the world. The narrator, Pete Rattigan is tender, introspective, and someone you can’t help but connect with. Brody, on the other hand, is nearly ADHD, always going off on tangents and can’t seem to focus himself. These two characters create a well-crafted balance and play off of each other nicely since Rattigan tends to function on reason and logic, he is the Apollonian, whereas Brody sees the beauty and logic in chaos and disorder, the Dionysian. The dynamic between Brody and Rattigan’s relationship and the way it unfolds is the driving force in this work. The dénouement is unexpected, poignant, and fulfilling. It may even make you tear up. Hats off to Mr. Marbut.
