Capsule eBook Kristin Helling Corey Helling Ellen Campbell

I got sucked in. I'm pretty particular about how many pages I turn before I give up on a book and go back to the lists in search of something great. Well, this book was never in danger of being closed. I want more.

Arcturus pulled me into his center of gravity (excusing the pun) and really made me feel what he felt. The setting is tight, the descriptions of the emotions and the setting, succinctly intense. There is no fluffy description here, and yet I saw the setting in my mind. I felt the struggles and emotional awkwardness of a man who has never stepped foot on earth. When things turned tense, I felt it.

I killed this in two sittings.

Helling is carrying the torch of her science fictions forbearers while providing a unique and fresh voice to deliver her story.

Capsule eBook Kristin Helling Corey Helling Ellen Campbell Reviews

Capsule is a remarkable novel about making choices when there appear to be none to make. Arcturus, the first human being born in space, is conceived shortly before his parents embark on a 30-year mission to explore the galaxy--a mission from which they will never return. Growing up with only his parents for tangible company, Arc interacts with everyone else through a video feed back to earth, his primary contacts being his doctor and the head of UniX mission control.

On earth, Arc has become a celebrity. An industry, including toys, has sprung up around the legend of the boy who is not expected to set foot on earth until he completes the return journey as a old man. However, the reality for Arc is very different. Far from being a romantic, adventure-filled journey, his life consists of mining asteroids for water to be turned into fuel and preparing to take control of the ship after his parents' death.

Everything has been planned out for his life since before he was born. But, like any young man, Arc develops his own personality and ideas. He is at turns rebellious, pouty, and self-critical. He says what is on his mind (to the wrong person, in one instance). However, he is also devoted to his parents and the mission. But have his parents truly prepared him for the loneliness that will be his everyday existence after their passing? And what happens when he falls in love with a young woman on earth--a woman he can never meet face to face?

Helling addresses all of these questions with refreshing honesty. She explores what it would truly be like to live in space--the brittle bones that result from his mother's osteoporosis (brought on by years of living in a mostly weightless environment) and Arc's pale skin, which has never known direct contact from the sun. She also addresses both the grandeur and loneliness of Arc's situation. He goes further than any other human being has gone, but at an enormous cost--one he was never given any choice of paying. But far from being bleak and desolate, Capsule is a hopeful novel--one about embracing the unknown of choice and appreciating what we have on earth.
This is a good first novel by Kansas City author Kristin Helling. The premise, of a man born in space to parents on a no-return mission to points beyond our Milky Way galaxy, is engaging as an exploration of the emotions of isolation in deep space. Arcturus Holst, our man in space, is accompanied through a significant portion of the story by his aging mother, and is connected to Mission Control back on Earth for additional human contact. When he exits the galaxy he must make decisions critical not only to the mission and his home planet, but also for himself and his future. Author Helling adopts some conventions for her novel that may seem unconventional, such as real-time communication with Earth from the fringe of the galaxy, but they are essential to the story and are rendered quite well. The ending is particularly strong. I enjoyed reading "Capsule" a great deal, and look forward to more from Ms. Helling.
I sat down with capsule and didn't get up again until the whole book was read. The reading was clear and concise, it moved forward quickly, and was filled with intriguing ideas and concepts.
A fresh sort of sci-fi story. Engaging characters and an interesting, unusual premise. I really like the way Helling developed her characters psychology and emotional state. She has a very readable writing style. I just kept reading until suddenly I was at the end. I hope for more along these lines.
I've always loved books that make you think. Science fiction is a natural setting for such stories, but most sci-fi authors don't make proper use of the opportunity afforded. Helling is one of the ones who does. This book had me thinking the whole time. Of the different possibilities the main premise affords, of how the protagonist might react under the unending stresses, how I might react. And so on. I found myself often setting Capsule on my lap and closing my eyes and just thinking about the universe the author had created. I love that feeling.

The basic premise is intriguing, but that's never enough for a good book. It also takes execution. Again, Hellinger comes through.

The plot is very good, although subtle. Just when you think you know what will happen next, the story takes a completely different turn. Best of all, it feels natural, as if of course that's the way the story was supposed to go, the mark of a talented story teller.

The characters are real. I was often frustrated by their actions. 'No don't do that - do this.' Another sign of a great author.

I highly recommend this book. Stick with it through the first couple chapters while the story unfolds. It's worth it.
